Welcome to the first post in my weekly series for agents, where I share honest, practical thoughts on building the business you actually want. This week I'm answering the question I hear more than almost any other: how do you choose a brokerage? My honest answer is that the brokerage you choose shouldn't make or break your business. It should help elevate it, and you have to be the one behind your own brand.
That belief is the reason I'm where I am today. It's also the lens I use for every conversation I have with agents who are thinking about making a change, so I wanted to put it down in writing, in my own voice, and share it with you.
The brokerage is a platform, not an identity
Early in my career I watched agents introduce themselves by their brokerage first and their own name second. I understood the instinct. A big logo feels like instant credibility, like you've borrowed someone else's reputation. But over time I realised something important: clients don't hire a logo. They hire a person they trust. They hire you.
Your name, your reputation, your past clients, your referrals, your reviews, the way you show up at a listing appointment, the way you answer the phone at 9pm when a buyer is nervous, that is your brand. A brokerage can give you a platform to stand on. It can't stand in for you, and it shouldn't try.
So when I talk about brand, I'm not talking about a colour scheme or a tagline. I'm talking about the person in the mirror. That's who your clients work with. That's who your community knows. And that's who you get to build, every single day, no matter whose name is above the door.
You bring the brand, the relationships, and the hustle
Let's be honest about something: no brokerage can bring your past clients back to you. No brokerage can sit across the table from a nervous first-time buyer and earn their trust. No brokerage can make your phone ring on a Tuesday morning. That's all you.
What a good brokerage can do is make sure your hustle pays off more. Better splits, so you keep more of what you earn. Better tools, so you spend less time on busywork and more time with people. Better support, so you're never figuring it out alone. When the platform works for you, your own effort goes further. That's the whole game, really: your work, amplified.
A good brokerage gives you tools, culture, and room to grow
I've spent time in brick-and-mortar offices, and I want to be fair: some of them are wonderful places with wonderful people. But the model itself can quietly shift your focus. Desk fees, overhead, the pressure to justify your seat in the building, it can start to feel like you work for the office instead of for your clients.
You should never feel owned by an office. Your business is yours. A good brokerage gives you tools, culture, and room to grow, and then gets out of your way so you can do the work only you can do.
How REAL felt different to me
When I was deciding where to hang my licence, I compared REAL with brick-and-mortar offices and with other cloud brokerages. I expected the differences to be about fees and splits. Those matter, and they're good here. But what actually stood out surprised me.
Real connection. I expected a virtual brokerage to feel lonely. Instead I found people who genuinely wanted me to succeed. Not competitors sharing a building, a community sharing a mission.
Real collaboration. Collaboration over competition has always been my belief, and it was the first thing I noticed at REAL. Agents share strategies, celebrate each other's wins, and help each other grow. In an industry that often runs on scarcity, that's rare. Here, it's the norm.
Real technology. Leo AI, HeyLeo, reZEN, the whole ecosystem is included with membership. These are tools that actually do the work, not add-ons you pay extra for. For someone like me who believes AI is the future of this business, that matters more than almost anything else.
Ownership upside. REAL is a publicly traded company, and production milestones can earn stock awards. That means as the platform grows, the people who helped build it can share in that growth. It's a different feeling from renting a desk at a brokerage that will never be yours.
The honest note about income streams
I want to be straight with you, because I think you deserve honesty more than hype. REAL does offer multiple streams of income: your commission, revenue share from agents you bring in, and stock awards. I genuinely believe these are a bonus of the model, and I talk about them openly.
But they are not for everyone, and nothing is guaranteed. Revenue share depends on who you bring in and how they perform. Stock awards depend on production and vesting schedules. None of it replaces the fundamentals: a strong split, fair fees, and tools that make you better. If you treat the extras as exactly that, extras, you'll never be disappointed, and you'll be pleasantly surprised when they show up.
What I will say is this: the model rewards the work you were going to do anyway. The income streams are a genuine bonus on top of a solid foundation, not a promise and not a hype line.
